Sony Had Reportedly Offered an Exclusivity Deal to Bethesda for Starfield

It seems Sony was hugely interested in an exclusivity deal with Bethesda on Starfield, but at the end of the day, Microsoft got the upper hand.

Bethesda’s merger to Xbox Game Studios will be bringing all the future titles of the company to Xbox Game Pass at launch, including Starfield, which could’ve been a PS5-exclusive if Microsoft wouldn’t step into the negotiation with Bethesda just in time.

Starfield, which is the next big game coming from Bethesda after Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, will be directly launched on Xbox Game Pass for PC and Xbox consoles. But did you know that it could be another PS5-exclusive if Microsoft wouldn’t attempt for acquiring the developer?

According to a recent tweet from Kinda Funny’s Imran Khan, Sony had been in talks with Bethesda to reach a timed-exclusivity deal for Starfield on PS5, but Microsoft’s interest in acquiring ZeniMax and Bethesda probably increased the deal’s price for Sony to a high degree, making them step back and let Microsoft do their business.

Apparently, Sony has been investing heavily in exclusivity deals with third-party developers to launch their next-gen titles on PS5 first. The company has already reached an agreement with Bethesda on making Ghostwire: Tokyo and Deathloop PS5 timed-exclusives, which will be honored, according to Phil Spencer.

Yesterday was quite a big day for Xbox and its community all over the world. One of the biggest deals in the video games industry has been announced just one day prior to the beginning of Xbox Series X and S pre-orders, which can truly be a game-changer for the next-generation of consoles. With Microsoft acquiring Bethesda, the first and biggest benefit for the Xbox eco-system users is the fact that they can enjoy all the future titles of Bethesda on Game Pass at day-one with no need for paying extra money. Also, the publisher’s previous games, including Doom Eternal, Prey, The Evil Within 2, and more will be joining the Xbox’s subscription service in the near future.
